Originally I had linked Chon Ji with Heian Shodan, though I was unable to determine an origin for the inner forearm block in the second half of the pattern. I was previously unaware of the Taikyoku series of kihon (basics) kata, which seem to be the basis of Chon Ji and the Saju exercises (or 2 of the 3, at least). These kihon kata were developed for Shotokan, and since General Choi studied Shotokan, it makes sense that his kihon equivalent was influenced by them, albeit with a different floor pattern.

Chon Ji combines the Low Block -> Punch from Taikyoku Shodan with the back stance Inner Forearm Block -> Punch from Taikyoku Sandan. Saju Jirugi uses the former, while Saju Makgi uses the block from the latter.

Chon Ji's 2nd half, shown here from behind, compared with Taikyoku Sandan, sharing identical stances.
