So San
So San is another of the post-1965 patterns, and, though it is a pattern I have not yet learned, it appears to contain very little if any Karate like the other late patterns.
The only similarities I've been able to see in So San have been used in prior patterns. The 45 angle block, recentered punch, other 45 block, recentered punch resembles the piece of Passai/Bassai-Dai or Kushanku/Kanku-Dai used earlier in Yoo Sin. The supporting backfist in the X stance from Passai is also seen elsewhere. There are bits and pieces here and there, but none are significant, and all have been seen prior.
However, So San does contain a 180 jump, which is different than any other jump in Chang Hon patterns. The jump in Kanku-Sho is described as a 180 degree jump, but is accompanied by a kick to the hand. This seems to be the only yet-unseen piece of Karate kata worth mentioning in So San.
