Do San

Do San contains sections from the 3rd and 4th patterns of the Pinan/Heian series. Specifically, it contains a variation practiced in Shotokan.

The following videos were used as reference:

ITF Legacy performance of Do San.

Hirokazu Kanazawa performing Heian Sandan and Heian Yondan.

Thomas Geiger performing Pinan Nidan.

Do San then repeats the beginning of the pattern, followed by the exact sequence found in the Shotokan variation of Heian Yondan:

-turn onto the 45 degree angle with a wedging block

-front kick

-two punches

-repeat on the other 45 degree angle

Similarities in Do San do not appear until movements 6. The opening block, punch combination is unremarkable.

Do San, after turning North and performing a knife hand block, follows with a spear hand, followed by a 360 degree turn stepping forward into a backfist, then another backfist. This sequence appears in Heian Sandan with a hammerfist and punch.

Also of note, most styles of Karate tend to perform their spear hand techniques with the other hand on the waist, whereas Shotokan is known for placing the hand under the elbow as practiced in most Taekwon-Do styles.

The wedging blocks are executed in different stances above, Do San in a front stance and Yondan in a back stance. Choi's 1965 book describes this movement of "HEI-AN PATTERN IV" as a left front stance, which means Do San is performed in the same manner that Choi practiced Heian Yondan.

As mentioned in Dan Gun, Do San also ends with a movement reminiscent of the ending of some styles of Pinan Nidan.
