Choi Yong
Choi Yong approaches the end of my personal familiarity with the Chang Hon patterns. Choi lists it as number 17 in his 1965 book, and it appears to be inspired by Unsu, a high level Shotokan pattern not mentioned in the book. Though it contains unquestionable links to Unsu, the pattern as a whole remains fairly unique.
The following videos were used as reference:
ITF Legacy performance of Choi Yong.
Older ITF video of Choi Yong.
Hirokazu Kanazawa performing Unsu (Shotokan).
"Shotokan Sensei" Paul Walker performing Unsu.
Choi Yong opens in a rear foot stance with a guarding block, followed by a single knuckle punch. This is very similar to Unsu, which, after is opening salutation, moves to a similar position followed with a single finger punch.
Most will perform this punch of Choi Yong at a normal pace with a slow sine-wave motion. I was taught this pattern with a quick knuckle punch, similar to Unsu's quick "Ippon Nukite", but I cannot find any videos demonstrating Choi Yong in this manner. Perhaps I am in the minority in this regard.
Choi Yong also contains a walking pressing block section, which is also found in Unsu.
Both patterns also contain the below hand position.
Aside from the opening movement of Passai-Dai (bottom), there is not much more that I have found in Choi Yong.
